Got Job.
hi ya'll.
last night i went to a big warehouse a couple miles from where i live. the warehouse used to be a bowling alley, i was told. but it is now scheduled for demolition. and GUESS what they will be building in its place: apartments.
everywhere shitheads are building apartments and condos. it IS a downer. luckily there are so many awesome old houses here though, that people are decent enough to maintain them and not allow dick contractors to come groping around everywhere with their blind development plans and profit mongering. tain main.
anyway, at this condemned warehouse there was a big art show. huge, awesome "tags" (spray painted colorful images/words) on a lot of the walls. a bunch of artists were involved. there were installations and paintings and sculptures too. i wished (at the time) that i had brought my camera so i could have taken pictures of some of it for you all to see. some of it was pretty neat, some of it wasn't, of course. i went with my roommates. right now some of 'em (my roomies) are rocking out in the basement.
full band practice.
i got a job at this joint called LAUGHING PLANET. there are 4 Laughing Planets in portland. they are "cafes." the one i work at has a commissary in the back of it. i work in the commissary. this commissary provides most of the prepared foods to each of the four cafes in portland.
my responsibilities of each day include:
-getting up at 7:30am and riding my bike to work by 8 am
-portioning and labeling a variety of soups, sauces, grilled vegetables, tofu, tempeh, potatoes, etc.
-placing these items in the walk-in refridgerator
-de-boning roughly 100 lbs of natural, locally grown, chicken breasts
-eating a free lunch (10 dollar limit) around 11:30 am. this usually consists of a burrito or quesadilla of some sort and a fruit smoothie
-after lunch, gathering and packing the orders for each of the other 3 cafes into little refridgerators on wheels (i get to use clipboards and a pen to ensure no mistakes!)
-putting these mobile refridgerators into the big Sprinter van, "Big Blue," and
-driving them to each of the other 3 Laughing Planet locations
-listening in the van to whichever cassette i brought from home that morning
-lastly, running various errands such as picking up tofu from the tofu place, or picking up the payroll, blah blah blah
right now i've been working 5-6 day weeks, 8 to 3:30 or 4. but eventually i'll only work 4 day weeks [@ 10 bucks an hour].
overall it is pretty sweet. i like the people and get to eat for free and i don't have to wash a single dish, nor talk to a single customer. i'll get my first check on friday, or like...whatever.
i'm planning on visiting L and R in B.C. in june, lord willing.
right now i'm drinking a cheap beer (hamm's) and watching a bird peck the power line outside my window. it was rainy today and it is slightly cold inside my room without a sweater.
things are in place.
i miss the winders.
i am/have been volunteering at a community garden next to a school in my neighborhood.
last week they taught the kids how to plant strawberries. or was it tomatoes?
it brings me back, watering a garden and all. i would like to plant a couple of things in the backyard here.
love.

wow, i have such a lovely picture of your happy-little-portland-life in my head right now. thanks for that! i cant wait for you to come here... let me know the specifics soon so i can get off work!
yay dids! sounds like a good job. and you are eating good too, that's good to hear. I miss gardens, that's so cool that you are working in one. when we were doing the community garden in flag it made me think of when i was a little girl and digging up carrots and eating garlic greens and throwing out rocks and pulling weeds from the patches in mom's garden. gardening is good for the soul i think.
how do you grow chicken breasts?
wow, you do the same thing every night...
